Transformation. Again.

Taking this and making it that.

Of all the buzzwords used in business today, transformation must be one of the most over-used. I should know. I’m one of the worst offenders. I use it liberally.

Recently I’ve had cause to rethink this. Looking from the perspective of a business owner, there will be very few who are enthusiastic about the prospect of complete upheaval of their operation. All at once it seems overwhelming, expensive, out of control and invalidating of everything they’ve worked so hard to achieve to date.

So, I want to define transformation in the terms that I see it. Every business in its current state has things that are working and things that are not. The balance of each might vary markedly, but it is universally true.

Sometimes what ails a business is right at its core. It could be simply in the wrong business. An example of this would be a manufacturing business that makes a product that has been made obsolete by something newer made by something else. In this case, transformation is a big thing. It requires that business to make some very serious decisions. Change or die would sum it up. Either change what they make to become relevant again or close the doors. This is major transformation.

On the micro level might be a business that has long standing niggling issues with team members. It might be about pay levels, it might be about leave entitlements, it might be about lack of role clarity leading to tension between people. It doesn’t matter how small the issue, it is like a grain of sand in an oyster, constantly creating low grade irritation. The problem is, it never ends in a pearl. It generally ends in bad blood and a team that is operating sub-optimally because the mood and relationships are not harmonious.

Tiny issues can create major barriers to success for any business and in this instance, resolving the tiny issue could be transformative. Small actions can leverage huge outcomes.

I guess my point here is that you shouldn’t be afraid of the word transformation. Whether the issue is huge or tiny, transformation is just the process of making the differences that matter.
