The Makings of a Great Boss

Bossing 101

Look, I have no desire to try and teach Granny to suck eggs. This also isn’t one of those start of 2025 motivational posts.

The reason I’m writing about this is a result of having talked in a relaxed environment with lots of people through the break and a theme came through in many conversations, from bosses and people who work for bosses.

That theme is that many teams are not performing to their full capability or capacity and that’s a concern in an economic environment where peak performance is advisable.

The truth is, there are simple things that bosses can focus on to make a difference. There’s many more than five, but for the purposes of not loading up too many things to think about, here’s five important ones.

1. Clear Communication

Communication is the backbone of any successful business. Great bosses know how to communicate their vision clearly, ensuring that everyone is on the same page. Whether it’s setting expectations, providing constructive feedback, or simply checking in with the team, effective communication builds trust and prevents misunderstandings.

Try This - Encourage open dialogue by fostering an environment where employees feel comfortable voicing their ideas and concerns. Regular team meetings and one-on-one catch-ups can go a long way in keeping everyone aligned and engaged.

2. Leading by Example

People respect leaders who walk the talk. Whether it's showing a strong work ethic, maintaining a positive attitude, or handling challenges with grace, your actions set the tone for the entire team. A boss who leads by example inspires employees to put in their best effort and maintain high standards.

Try This - Be consistent in your actions and values. If you expect punctuality, be punctual yourself. If you advocate for a healthy work-life balance, demonstrate it by setting boundaries and respecting them.

3. Investing in Employee Growth

A great boss understands that an investment in their team is an investment in the business. Offering opportunities for professional development not only enhances skills but also shows employees that they are valued. Whether it’s training programs, mentoring, or encouraging upskilling, fostering growth helps build loyalty and motivation.

Try This - Regularly check in with your team members about their career goals and explore ways the business can support their development. This could be through external courses, mentorship, or cross-training within the company.

4. Building a Positive Workplace Culture

Culture plays a massive role in team alignment and overall job satisfaction. A positive work environment where employees feel valued, respected, and appreciated can significantly impact productivity and retention. Recognising achievements, celebrating milestones, and fostering teamwork all contribute to a thriving culture.

Try This - Lead with empathy and gratitude. A simple "thank you" or acknowledging a job well done can have a lasting impact on morale.

5. Adaptability and Resilience

Resilience and adaptability are crucial traits for any leader. A great boss is proactive in facing challenges, ready to pivot when necessary, and supportive of their team during uncertain times. Demonstrating a solutions-oriented mindset helps the team stay focused and positive.

Try This - Stay open to change and encourage your team to embrace it too. Being transparent about challenges and involving your team in problem-solving can foster a collective sense of ownership and resilience.

Conclusion

What I’ve just said isn’t ground-breaking. Nor is it original thinking. In many ways, it’s Boss 101. So why say it at all? Because in so many situations, a smart-arse, complex and expensive solution isn’t needed. What is? Just doing the basics well and the truth is we all need reminding sometimes that the things we know and have forgotten to do properly are the best things of all to remember and do.
